Acers - 31 different varieties
As the garden is predominantly Japanese-style it would not be complete without a couple of Acers. However, as can be seen from the photos below, the couple of Acers has now risen to 35 (31 different varieties)! It has become a known fact that, when visiting garden centres, I can sense the Acers section a mile off.
Below are photographs of the Acers currently in our garden with relevant details and, wherever possible, the date of purchase and company purchased from. Any which don't have dates on were bought between 2010 and 2011.
The Acers are strategically placed around the garden so it hasn't been possible to take a complete photo of all of them. The original plan was that they would just be on the gravel area around the teahouse but, in view of my obsession with them, they are now sneaking into every nook and cranny!
The first Acer to be bought was the Acer palmatum 'Brilliantissimum' which was bought in memory of my Dad (Arthur) who died in 1985. He had a magnificent one in the family front garden and it was his pride and joy. So much so that I bought a second one in June 2013!
We do seem to have had a problem keeping an Acer palmatum 'Garnet'. We lost our original 'Garnet' but it was our own fault as we had left it in a pot (with a view to planting it in the ground) and it had dried out without us realising it.We bought another one to replace it in May 2012 but in the Autumn of 2012 it wasn't looking brilliant so, we began to think the ground isn't suitable for the 'Garnet'. By April 2013 it was coming back to life and looked as though it would be fine, however, by June 2013 it had completely died off. We decided to give it one last go and bought another one in April 2014 but, this time, have put it in a pot on the patio.
Acers are renowned for their Autumn colours so I have set up a separate page entitled 'Autumn Colours'!
The following Acers are shown in reverse order of purchase.....

24th May, 2014.
This was a direct replacement for a 'Brilliantissimum' purchased on 5th June, 2013 which, in May 2014, had reverted to its original root stock – the tree had been grafted. As we had photographs from when it was originally purchased and from now, together with the receipt of purchase, Daisy Nook Garden Centre were more than happy to replace it.
Photos of both the original and the replacement tree are below

Acer palmatum 'Japanese Sunrise'
Hippopottering Japanese Maple Nurseries April 2013
FOC
We had previously bought a 'Japanese Sunrise' but lost it over the 2011/12 winter as it was in too windy a spot. The new one was doing well and had begun to show itself in March 2013. However, Mike was doing some work in the garden and, for no apparent reason, lost his balance, fell over and, landed on the 'Japanese Sunrise' and snapped off part of the tree – thankfully he was ok. He has potted the broken trunk into a small pot with the possibility that it might survive. As Hippopottering Japanese Maple Nurseries very kindly gave us a replacement in April 2013 (see below), we dug up the remaining part of the tree and planted it into a patio pot so that the new one could be planted in its place.

Specimen Acers
The centrepiece of the Yin & Yang in the garden originally contained a Bamboo in the 'eye' of each half. In April 2013 we decided to take the Bamboo out and replace it with two specimen Acers. Having searched around for what we wanted, i.e. approx 5ft above ground level, we were eventually recommended Hippopottering Japanese Maple Nursery in East Lound, nr Doncaster. We are extremely grateful to Pat who was very patient with our e-mails and provided us with a list of a possible 9 varieties to choose from. We arranged to visit Hippopottering on 4th April, 2013 and, after much thought and perusal we reserved the following two which Mike and Malcolm (my brother) went to pick up the following week (11th April). Pat was a little concerned as neither of the Acers were in leaf but we had every confidence that they would be ok. Thanks go to our friends Sue & Tony for the loan of their 7-seater vehicle to go and collect the trees – even though Mike did pick up a speeding fine on his way there!
In October 2012 I arranged a school reunion for my old girls boarding school at which 113 ex-pupils and staff attended (www.stelphins.co.uk). As a thank you for organising the event, the girls kindly had a collection and purchased an Orchid plant and £80 worth of gardening vouchers. The vouchers were a very welcome contribution towards the 'Tamuke yama' below.

Although the leaf buds were flourishing in March 2014, by the end of May 2014 they had virtually died off and, at the moment, we are unsure why. The area around the tree has become quite water-logged and we are wondering if this may be the problem.
